Resolutions, yay or nay?

Every year, millions of people make resolutions on New Year’s Eve. They join gyms or cut their alcohol intake. Some consider changing careers. Others make frivolous ones like, eat dessert first. OK, that’s one I can get behind.

The problem with resolutions is that we make them, and mean them in the moment, but they have the average shelf life of a carton of milk. By mid-January, we’re back to our hectic lives, our resolutions and good intentions tossed aside like wrapping paper on Christmas morning.

Last year, in a blog entry on my webpage, I listed the following resolutions:

1. Eat better and healthier

2. Up my writing game

3. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Did okay on the first, on and off. Need to do much better this coming year. Did the second, but again I can do much better. And the third is kind of a personal mantra anyway.

This year, I'm thinking about resolutions for the world. And here’s my list:

1. Be kind to each other. We don’t all have to be the same. How boring would that be?

2. Be kind to the planet. We only have one home. Treat her better or our kids and grandkids are screwed.

3. Be kind to yourself. We all set ourselves up for failure; push ourselves too hard at times. Are our own worst enemies. Give yourself a break.

4. Perform one random act of kindness in 2020. Or each month. Or whenever the spirit moves you. The world will be a better place.

5. Stop and smell the roses. Or daisies. Or the freshly cut grass. Life moves at the speed of light. Don’t miss out.

6. Be present. You only get this one life. Don’t miss it glancing at your phone.
