Adulting isn't always what it's cracked up to be.

Adulting is a word, by the way. Or at least it should be. The Urban Dictionary defines adulting as "to do grown up things and hold responsibilities." If it's good enough for the Urban Dictionary, it's good enough for me.

I have two kids, 13 and 15. Yes, that's right. I have two teenagers. Explains a lot, doesn't it? Anyway, they're always telling me they can't wait to be adults. Every parent reading this is laughing. Probably every adult. "No one tells you when to go to bed," laments my 13 year old son. "You get to make all your own choices," moans my 15 year old daughter.

Yes, I get to decide my own bedtime. And usually, I choose badly. Like all week at RWA. I should have been going to bed before ten or so. These are long, exhausting days in swamp-like heat. But no, there are things like HULU and Netflix. And as for choices, that's just filled with pitfalls. All week at the national RWA conference, I've had to choose which lecture to go to. Usually there were three or four I really wanted to attend. At the same time. Then none the next hour. That's adulting.

Watching the afore mentioned Netflix or HULU when I should be writing my next book. That's also adulting. I had hoped to write 10,000 words in the past two weeks. Not even close. Adulting got in the way. There was work and soccer practice, kids to be taken here and there, etc.

But every once in a while, if you're lucky, adulting doesn't suck. The enclosed picture is case in point. Ordering chocolate cake from room service at 10:00PM. I made that decision all on my own. As an adult. Was it the best decision I could have made? Of course not. But, I'm an adult, so I get to have chocolate cake late at night if I want. Welcome to adulting!
